You and I may call this dark blue ‘azure’. Others name it lapis lazuli, which means stone of azure. This ball reminds us of that stone which is blue and flecked with pyrite, or fools gold.
In ancient Egypt, Lapis lazuli was a favorite stone for amulets and scarabs or seals. It was favored because of the blue hue. Even Cleopatra used it for her dramatic blue eye shadow.
As inscribed in the Egyptian ‘Book of the Dead’ Lapis lazuli in the shape of an eye set in gold was considered an amulet of great power.
