The Zuni, one of the Pueblo people, live in New Mexico. Their knowledge of fine silversmithing began in the 1870's after learning fundamentals from the Navaho. Many Zuni have become master silversmiths, practicing the art of stone inlay.
Their jewelry has a unique appearance consisting of small pieces of stone, usually turquoise, to create intricate designs. The small stones are set close to one another or side by side. Some of their designs consist of very small stones set so closely that they resemble tiny stitches. Hence the name ZUNI NEEDLEPOINT.
